An eight-year-old boy from Northwestern Ontario is recovering after living for three days on an artificial heart, a device pediatric surgeons are using more and more to save lives.
Artificial hearts are typically implanted in adults. With the invention of the Berlin Heart 13 years ago, children can also benefit from the medical advance until a heart transplant is available.
Brandon Shapland of Kenora, Ont., is one of them. He was suffering from cardiomyopathy, a disease of the heart muscle that reduces its ability to pump. "We almost lost him twice," said his mother, Lisa Shapland. "We just said if he wants to go on then he will, and if he doesn't then we'll let him go."
Doctors at Edmonton's Stollery Children's Hospital used the Berlin Heart to keep Brandon alive until a donor heart could be found.
Like the heart itself, the device is basically a pump. It sits outside the body, with tubes connecting it to the child's own failing heart.
Worldwide, 127 children have been implanted with the Berlin Heart. Brandon is the fifth child in the country to use one.
So far, all the Canadian children who've received a Berlin Heart have gone on to have successful heart transplants.
"The success rate really has been good," said Dr. Ivan Rebeyka, a pediatric cardiac surgeon "That's what's really caught people's interest in terms of having an alternative to keep these children alive until a transplant's available."
Doctors estimate between 10 and 12 Canadian children could use the artificial heart each year. It costs about $200,000 to buy time for a child who might not otherwise live long enough to receive a real heart.
Children can survive with a Berlin Heart for up to a year, Rebeyka said. In Brandon's case, he only needed it for three days before receiving a donor heart on May 22.
"He was only on it for three days, but it did make him quite a bit stronger," his mother said.
Brandon is scheduled to be released from hospital at the end of August.
